Copyranter
This week we're looking at a blog called Copyranter. Here are some questions to start our discussion: What kinds of choices is the author making with his language? Why do you think he's making them? This blogger says he's a New York copywriter. What impulse do you think is driving his particular interest in global advertising? Who do you think are the people who comment on these posts? When Copyranter chimes into the conversation, what kind of relationship does he seem to be establishing with them? What do you think is the function of this blog? What is its intended purpose?

After browsing Copyranter's page a while, I've decided that he seems to be an immature adult who is using his anonymous name to rant and rave about various advertising topics, and sometimes totally random topics. I don't think he's analyzing these subjects much at all, because you could get a similar type responses from many vulgar high schoolers, if you ask me. He seems to like poking fun at foreign ad companies most often, although he does sprinkle in some home-grown articles as well. Maybe since he's from NY, NY he is exposed to a variety of foreign companies, and obviously he hates them since he hates everything, so why not attack them via blogs. As far as his followers are concerned, many of them remain anonymous as well, so I'm led to believe they share the same personality type as Copyranter. Those who were actually identifiable rarely used curse words, so I assume they were just interested in the topic and commented on it. My personal opinion is if he spends so much time bashing these ads, then he probably doesn't have much else to do, and if it were me, I'd be pretty aggravated about that too. So why not get his aggression out in a non-violent and anonymous way. Hey, if it works for him, more power to him.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Copyranter is immature because if anyone saw some of those ads such as "Bouncing Boobs Sells Earbuds" I think we would all be thinking the same thing. The difference is that we would most likely not put in as much time looking for ads like these whereas finding these ads is a major priority for copyranter. Yes, Copyranter is negative and does bash may ads but the reason that these ads are interesting is because there is something weird, offensive, funny, etc. about them. The author's crude language adds to a more casual feel of the blog and almost allows the reader to know the author better. In many advertisements there are implicit messages that are often unseen by the audience and Copyranter brings these implicit messages to people's attention. Whether the implicit message is political, sexual, sexist, or racist, the author remains honest and posts some sort of analysis to generate thought.
ReplyDeleteI also do not find Copyranter to be immature. I spent a lot of time looking at various ads on this website and, although he never takes a very formal tone with any ad, he only rips on the advertisements that deserve to be ripped on. Some of the ads that are not completely ridiculous he posts on his blog just for the sake of sharing them with everyone else who would never see them otherwise. I enjoy the fact that Copyranter uses informal language and provocative posts because it makes his blog much more interesting than his competition. I would rather read and watch things that make me laugh or are interesting than spend my time reading some overly thought, formal response to an ad that does not overstep any boundaries.
ReplyDeleteBeing new to blogging and such, it's really interesting to see what is out there. When we were introduced to Copyranter I had obviously never experienced anything to that extent. After browsing the page for a while I found all his posts very interesting. Yes he tends to ridicule everything possible and claim he hates everything imaginable, yet he sets the tone through his responses that gets us readers to look at such things that are presented to our society even though we personally are not involved and invites us to share our reaction. I agree with Peter and Ila when they say that they don't find the author to be immature. He's simply stating his opinion and most likely is commenting the things that people think but refuse to say for themselves. Although he tends to be so rash, he's able to get alot of viewers and comments back on his topics, so his intentions through this blog are obviously working out the way he wants.
ReplyDeleteI find that the author's use of vulgar language and using an anonymous name help allow us to see the real him and his true thoughts. As JCheeks said, those who aren't anonymous don't seem to say things that are as strong of statements, however I believe that their statements are only as such because they don't want people to think ill of them. Here, though, the author is freely expressing his mind which gives the reader an interesting insight into the subject. I think that he brings so many foreign advertisements in because it allows us to see the world from other points of views and see different cultures and the implicit messages their media contains. We are constantly flooded with our own type of media and it is important to see the implicit messages that both our media contains and media outside the United States contains.
ReplyDeleteI agree that copyranter's anonymity allows him to say whatever he wants, but I disagree with Tyler, that we're seeing the "real him." I think he tries to project a certain image and persona on this blog, and that he purposely exaggerates his negativity using vulgar language. I think he does this in order to get a response out of people, since people often have stronger reactions to stronger comments. He picks foreign, often controversial ads and comments strongly on them in order to rub people the wrong way and so that they will respond to what he has posted, or at least think about the ad. One thought I had though, I wonder if he goes out of his way looking for these ads, or if he just happens to come across them in his line of work.
ReplyDeleteI can agree with Paige that I have never been apart of the whole blogger system and seeing so many ridiculous ads. The copyranter isn't immature but instead he expresses his thoughts that come to mind. Some of the ads aren't relevant in his opinion which gives him the idea to respond with vulagr language. By the author expressing his vulgar language allows him to speak and criticize other ads that many viewers do not get to see everyday. Some of the ads such as the foreign ads on his page doesn't always get rip on them instead he gives a humor tone to most readers.By the author expressing his ideas he gives us the mainstream view of other parts of the world and how we see them from our points of view eventhough the message or purpose is like or not liked. The implicit message he writes about keeps many people stongly interested especially when it comes across dumb ads like "cupcake boobs" on his page. The relationship he has with his comments are informal because he keeps his name anonymous and he replys to many ads in a unique ways to attract others.
ReplyDeleteI think that copyranter craves attention in the majority of his postings. He knows that if he speaks in an aggressive or vulgar tone while making fun of something, people will laugh. He wants his audience to think that he is funny and he belittles other people's work to make him feel better about his own pathetic self.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching some ads posted on copyranter's blog, I find the copyranter has a quite unique way in choosing his postings.Instead of advertising the product directly, most of the ads conveys the idea in a quite secret way, like the ads of Honda. After reading the comments of copyranter, I don't think he makes the comments on the ads in the way a copywriter should have. He always uses the aggressive language to attack the person making these ads. I don't know the reason why he does this. But one thing I can say for sure is that as a New york copywriter, copyranter wants to show his authority or uniqueness through making such comments. As he said, he has worked for an ads company for 18 years as a copywriter, which implies that he should be quite successful in this field. And this blog is a best way to show that he knows much more about ads than other people. And I think that's the intended purpose of the blog.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the blogger copyranter is taking a real laid back approach to his blog and want to make it extremely laid back like he is talking to one of his buddies. You can see this by the cursing with in the blog, and also by all the comments that would not be appropriate for immature viewers to read. He seems very interested in the opposite sex, and posts a lot of blogs that he finds amusing with topless women in them. I think that the impulse he is driving for the readers is that he is comfortable with his sexuality, and how he finds that sex sells, and also how it can be amusing for a seller. The man has created a whole entire blog on that topic alone, and people seem that they follow his stuff. In my opinion i would not waste my time reading his blog unless i was extremely bored.
ReplyDeleteAfter going over the blog, the guy seems like he doesnt have a life and likes boobs, but hates fake ones. The language he uses is not professional, probably because it is just a blog and doesnt have to be. it also reveals more about his personality. The people who comment on this blog are young men that may be fat and eating cheezies at the time. The function of this blog is to give young male adults some humour while giving some helpful information. Copyranter is trying to be funny. The type of writing is informative but also humorous. The intended audience is young male adults.
ReplyDeleteLooking through the page it seems to be a very immature blog of postings. After looking into the type of writing that the author posted, I came to notice that his posts are not very well analyzed. They are more random thoughts and posts of rather disturbing photos, or videos. The author seems to be making a very open type of suggestion towards his posts, so that his "viewers" can create their own opinions on his work. I think that he posts these type of advertisements because it is unusual. In society today I feel as if people are always trying to draw attention to themselves, or their work so the spotlight will shine on them; regardless or how they need to grab people's attention. The author being "from" New York hints that he is exposed to many different types of people and companies. These companies hint that he is angry towards them and attacking them through a blog site seems more eye grabbing then in person.
ReplyDeleteAs with most "bloggers" on the internet, he is taking advantage of his anonymity with his blog posts. I can nearly guarantee that if he was required to put his real name on his blog site, that he would not be posting or commenting the way he does. Also, how much time does this guy put into his anonymous blog? Too much in my opinion. He posts something every few hours! That is ridiculous. How does he get any work done? Now, I am not saying that blogging your thoughts is bad, I am just saying blogging them to the extent that he does is in fact bad. I am not a fan of this man's blog and think that mainly he is looking for attention over the internet.
ReplyDeleteAs a hole I like Copyranter and don’t think he’s an immature at all. Coypranter is negative and does bash may ads but the reason that these ads are interesting is because there is something weird, disgusting, funny, etc. about them. Copyranter has loud and crude adds but that’s what makes you continue to read and come back to his blog! In advertisements there tends to be messages between the lines/behind the senses and copyranter seems to point them out and really get your attention.
